Pot smoking girls have been the butt of jokes and comedy movies for decades. A girl smoking pot has been equated with a girl who was “easy” and who could quickly and without difficulty be persuaded to answer a booty call. Yet what is the lure of the drug that has girls smoking marijuana in higher numbers every year? While it is well known that girls will smoke cigarettes more readily than boys to mask their nervousness in a crowd and also because they mistakenly equate cigarette smoking – usually of those who are in the clique trying to hide their anxiety – with being associated with a coveted in-group, it is a bit of a puzzle what makes contributes to so many teen girls smoking weed.

In the past it has been theorized that the sense of belonging a girl smoking weed will experience to the small circle of friends with whom she engages in this still illicit activity in and of itself provides the lure. After all, weed smoking girls giggle together, have the munchies together, and go through hiding the entire activity from the parents of the girl in whose house they are engaging in this activity. Thus, girls that smoke weed are said to do so because their clique structure is reinforced by the behavior and because it gives them a joint secret to keep. Girls smoking marijuana even begin developing their own lingo to set up the next time that the activity takes place and also to specify the location of the next meeting.

Yet there is another reason why there are more girls smoking marijuana than boys – at least initially during the preteen and teen years: the use of pot in baked goods. Perhaps it is a trifle childish to have reefer baked into sweets which are colloquially known as space cakes, but the fact that these treats contain the drug yet might still be enjoyed right under mom and dad’s nose simply adds to the allure. Suddenly the drug is not all that serious anymore, and pretty soon the girls go from eating pot laced confectionaries to becoming girls smoking marijuana.

Yet another, perhaps more insidious, reason has girls smoking marijuana in higher numbers: it is done away with as a harmless substance that might actually be good for you. A magazine devoted to illicit drug use time and again harps on the alleged facts dredged up from questionable scientific studies that have little if any basis in truth, which claim that a girl smokes weed to feel better about herself, about school, and about life in general. Additionally, girls smoking pot pictures are plastered over the pages to show that seemingly successful women indulge in the habit and that to be part of the hip culture a girl smokes pot – plain and simple. Obviously, the side effects that mention the depression that follows a prolonged high or the anxiety attacks and heart palpitations that many experience are not mentioned. Thus, when a girl experiences them they usually will not share this with others, adding to the notion of the harmlessness of the drug.
