Smoking pipes is the kind of activity that has been demonstrated time and again on television or in pop culture, yet very little is actually known about the habit of pipe smoking as well as the methodology that is involved in this activity. For example, did you know that when smoking pipe tobacco, you will not actually inhale the smoke as you would with a cigarette, but instead you simply suck it into your mouth where you will taste the tobacco only to then let it leave your mouth slowly? It is interesting to note that in the past this has been cited as a selling point for smoking pipes for sale at local head shops; the implication of course was the notion that this form of smoking would prevent lung cancer and the other ills associated with cigarette smoking. Unfortunately, this is an incorrect assertion and smoking pipes does not lessen your risk of lung cancer but instead adds additional risk factors to the experience, such as cancer of the mouth, lips, throat, cheeks, and esophagus.
When it comes to pipes, smoking aficionados are usually on the lookout for the best materials. Probably known to anyone who is even the least bit versed in the art of smoking pipes is the Meerschaum which is actually not crafted from wood like so many other kinds, but instead from a mineral that is easily carved. The real Meerschaum pipe is carved from a block of the material while imitations are usually molded from the dust of the mineral that is then mixed with a number of other chemicals. While it is considered a youthful activity to make your own smoking pipes from corncobs, the average pipe smoker will spend a lot of time and effort in shopping for the right device with which to enjoy the tobacco. It is interesting to note that women smoking pipes are increasing in number not just because cigarette smoking is becoming less and less acceptable in society, but also because the act of smoking pipes is a much more social activity that also takes a longer time, thus detracting from the habit aspect and much more readily falling into the hobby category. Do not be mistaken though – whether you are smoking pipes or cigarettes, the pipe smoke is still containing carcinogens and thus smoking a pipe does carry health risks! While pipe smoking for beginners is a bit difficult in the beginning, the use of a smoking pipe stand, stone smoking pipes, wooden smoking pipes and even old smoking pipes that have been passed down from other generations might make it a bit more difficult to understand all there is about the experience. Unlike smoking cigarettes, it is advisable to learn as much as you can about the mechanics of pipe smoking before trying it out for yourself for the first time. |
